Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan will install 10 hydro posts for automated water accounting systems on the Syr Darya River, reports the press service of Kazakhstan's Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurligitov, and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Water Management, Shavkat Khamraev, held talks in which they discussed the rational use of water resources.

The two sides agreed on 10 locations for the installation of modern water accounting systems. Nurligitov stated that negotiations are underway with international organizations for the joint implementation of the project.

The ministers also discussed the work plan for the Naryn-Syr Darya cascade reservoirs for the upcoming pre-irrigation period. The forecast schedule for the operation of the reservoirs will be drawn up at the next meeting of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination in Central Asia, where the volumes of water supply will also be approved.

“We intend to continue close bilateral cooperation. On many issues, we share common views. This allows us to resolve most of the existing issues on a mutually beneficial basis,” Nurligitov said.

In turn, Shavkat Khamraev expressed Uzbekistan’s desire to strengthen cooperation within the framework of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS). He stated that Uzbekistan supports Kazakhstan’s chairmanship of the fund.

“We want to strengthen cooperation in this direction and work together on projects. For example, on the preservation of the ecosystems of the Syr Darya and Amu Darya river basins, ensuring local residents have access to quality drinking water, and restoring small and local water bodies,” Khamraev noted.
