38 people convicted of polygamy in Uzbekistan

38 men have been convicted in Uzbekistan for practicing polygamy in the last 5.5 years, including four cases in the first half of 2023, Gazeta.uz reports.

Between 2018 and 2022, 34 men were convicted under Article 126 ("Polygamy") of the Criminal Code in Uzbekistan.

Polygamy, which refers to cohabiting with two or more women under a common household, is punishable by a fine ranging from 50 to 100 times the base calculation amount or by corrective labor for up to three years, or imprisonment for one to three years, or imprisonment for up to three years.

The population of Uzbekistan is approximately 36 million, with roughly equal numbers of women and men, and the majority of the population adheres to Islam. Uzbekistan is a secular state, and the country's population follows Islamic traditions.

Before the Soviet power came to Central Asia, polygamy was practiced, but it has been officially prohibited since 1918.
