The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will continue to provide sovereign and non-sovereign financing to Kyrgyzstan for the further development of renewable energy in accordance with the new partnership strategy for 2023-2027, said the Country Director of ADB in Kyrgyzstan, Jean Woo, Trend.az reports.
The financing will include expanding the scope of the urban mobility program and supporting other government initiatives aimed at the development of Kyrgyzstan's energy sector.
Jean Woo noted that ADB supports the country's energy sector through various projects, including:
- A $100 million financing package for the modernization project of the Uch-Kurgan hydropower plant.
- A $68 million financing package for the second phase of the Toktogul hydropower plant rehabilitation project.
- A $56 million financing package for the third phase of the Toktogul hydropower plant rehabilitation project.
- Financing of over $50 million for the urban transport electrification project.
"Kyrgyzstan has extensive hydropower resources, potentially capable of producing about 150 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity per year. Currently, only 10 percent of this potential is being utilized," emphasized Jean Woo.
He mentioned that currently, about 80% of the electricity in Kyrgyzstan is provided by hydro resources, while the rest is produced by two thermal power plants in Bishkek and Osh.
