Improvement of official relations between Moscow and Kabul is possible if Russia removes the Taliban movement from the list of terrorist organizations, said Zakir Jalali, an advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Afghan government, TASS reports .
Jalali noted that significant progress has been made in relations between Russia and Afghanistan over the past three years. According to him, the possible removal of the terrorist organization status from the Taliban by the Russian leadership will eliminate the last obstacle to establishing official relations between the countries.
The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative emphasized that Afghan officials recently participated in the International Economic Forum "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum" held in Tatarstan. They are now invited to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, which will take place in June.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that it is important to establish ties with the Taliban since they dominate Afghanistan and are the current authority in the country. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that the proposal to remove the movement from the list of terrorist groups "reflects an understanding of reality."
