Afghanistan and Turkmenistan have signed a $5 million agreement to upgrade Torghundi Port, a key trade hub between the two nations. The initiative, reported by Afintl.af, aims to enhance regional connectivity and boost transit potential between South and Central Asia.
According to Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Works, the agreement was signed between the country’s Railway Authority and Turkmenistan’s state-owned railway construction company, Demiryollary Gurlushyk.
Under the deal, the Turkmen side will design and construct modern cargo handling facilities, including warehouses, along the Torghundi–Herat rail line. These upgrades are expected to expand the port’s capacity and improve its operational efficiency.
The development of Torghundi is part of Afghanistan’s broader strategy to become a land bridge for regional trade. Officials believe that improved infrastructure will increase import and export volumes and reinforce Afghanistan’s role in cross-border logistics.
This agreement is part of a series of recent joint infrastructure initiatives between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, particularly in transport and energy. Afghan authorities continue to emphasize the importance of such projects for sustainable economic growth and regional stability.
The Ministry added that the Torghundi project will not only streamline trade processes but also create new commercial opportunities, enhance logistics, and contribute to long-term development goals through regional cooperation.
