Afghanistan on Brink: Humanitarian Aid Threatened by $1.4 billion Shortfall

The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan could sharply escalate in 2025, as international aid organizations warn of a critical funding shortfall that threatens life-saving assistance for millions across the country, Ariananews.af reports.

According to the Inter-Cluster Coordination Group (ICCT), as of May 2025, only 53% of the $3.06 billion required for the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan had been received. The resulting $1.43 billion deficit may carry over into the current year, jeopardizing key programs in health care, water and sanitation, shelter, and protection.

Although 22.4 million Afghans received some form of aid in 2024, food assistance remained dominant: 67% of recipients received reduced rations. Only 3.1 million people - 41% of the target - received sustained multisectoral support.

Aid agencies warn that, without adequate funding, critical services such as healthcare and sanitation may be scaled back even further. The situation is exacerbated by operational restrictions on female humanitarian workers and declining international attention.

Organizations are urging donors to urgently increase their contributions to prevent a rise in mortality and a deepening humanitarian catastrophe.
