Despite remaining largely unrecognized by most countries, the Taliban government of Afghanistan has successfully developed economic cooperation with its neighbors and the Islamic world, the Afghan Ministry of Industry and Trade stated, reports Asiaplus.tj.
In 2024, Afghanistan’s total imports and exports amounted to approximately $13 billion.
The main destinations for Afghan exports include such countries as Pakistan, India, UAE, Uzbekistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Turkey, Iraq, Tajikistan.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Afghanistan emphasized that agricultural products—such as figs, cotton, and raisins—make up a significant portion of exports. However, exports of carpets, lead, and precious and semi-precious stones also increased last year.
Afghanistan's imports are mainly composed of:
- Fuel and liquefied gas
- Oil
- Auto parts
- Medicines and medical equipment
- Flour and rice
According to Tajikistan’s statistical agency, the total trade turnover between Tajikistan and Afghanistan in 2024 reached approximately $105 million, with Tajik exports accounting for 93.3% ($98 million).
Bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Afghanistan grew by 6.8% in 2024 compared to 2023. The Tajik-Afghan trade share in Tajikistan’s total foreign trade in 2024 was 1.2%.
Tajikistan’s total foreign trade turnover last year exceeded $8.9 billion.
Electricity remains Tajikistan’s primary export to Afghanistan, accounting for 67% of bilateral trade.
According to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Energy, the country exported 1.53 billion kWh of electricity to Afghanistan in 2024, valued at 705.2 million somoni (approximately $70 million).
In addition to electricity, Tajikistan also exports:
- Construction materials (mainly cement)
- Food products (in smaller volumes)
