Seismic audit of city facilities will be carried out in Almaty, Mayor of the city Yerbolat Dossayev said, KAZAKHSTAN TODAY reports.

Work will begin in July and be completed in 2024.

“16,701 objects built after 2000 will be examined. Of these, 1641 are multi-apartment residential buildings, 15,060 are civil and public buildings. Also in 2023, seismic strengthening of 16 social facilities will be carried out and design and estimate documentation for seismic strengthening of 34 objects will be developed,” the akim said.

Attention to the former capital of Kazakhstan is not accidental. Kazakhstan as a whole is included in the list of states with seismic instability. The territories of Almaty, East Kazakhstan, Zhambyl, Kyzylorda and Turkestan regions are subject to a high potential for seismic hazard. However, the Almaty region is the most active - an earthquake can also lead to avalanches, mudflows, and dam breaks.

The seismic audit of city facilities is carried out in accordance with the instructions of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov, given by the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the city leadership, to carry out such work as soon as possible and implement effective measures to improve seismic safety in Almaty.

Almaty city is biggest megapolis of Kazkahstan with 2,5 mln population and located on South-East of the country. It is surraunded by Terskey Alatau mountain range. It was the capital of Kazakhstan till 1997.
