An armed clash between Tajik border guards and a group of armed individuals occurred on Wednesday, December 24, along the Tajikistan–Afghanistan border. This was reported by the state news agency Khovar, citing the press service of the Border Troops of Tajikistan.
According to the authorities, three armed individuals crossed into Tajik territory from the Afghan side on the evening of December 23. They were detected the following day at around 11:15 a.m. local time. Border guards said the intruders refused to comply with orders to surrender and opened fire, offering armed resistance. The statement noted that they intended to carry out an attack on one of the border posts.
As a result of the exchange of fire, all three attackers were killed, along with two servicemen of the Border Troops of Tajikistan. Firearms, ammunition, and explosive materials were seized from the dead. The situation along the affected section of the border is currently described as stable.
On the day of the incident, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon took part remotely in the opening of four new border outposts along the Afghan border, as well as other military infrastructure facilities. According to official reports, the new outposts were built in hard-to-reach areas that had previously been insufficiently protected.
Tajik authorities say this was the third armed incident on the border over the past month and expect the Afghan side to take additional measures to ensure border security.
