Since the beginning of 2024, Kazakhstan has chaired the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea. The chairmanship will last for three years, during which President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been elected as the president of the fund, reports Ritmeurasia.ru.

Astana has actively engaged in leading the fund and organizing measures critical to preserving the Aral Sea. As stated by Yerbolat Pernekhan, head of the Water Cooperation Department for Central Asia at the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan, the fund is energetically cooperating with international organizations and actively promoting its initiatives on global platforms.

"On May 22, 2024, in Indonesia, within the framework of the 10th World Water Forum, the Executive Committee of the IFAS held a sub-regional session on 'Transboundary Water Cooperation in the Aral Sea Basin for a Better Future'," said Pernekhan.

"The session was attended by heads of water management agencies from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. On June 12, 2024, in Tajikistan, the IFAS Executive Committee, together with the World Bank, held a roundtable of Central Asian water ministers on the topic 'Achieving Greater Water Use Efficiency in the Central Asian Region' as part of the 3rd High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action 'Water for Sustainable Development' 2018-2028," said Pernekhan.
