Tajikistan's national energy holding company, Barqi Tojik, has disclosed details of its agreement with Afghanistan's energy company Breshna regarding electricity supplies.

The contract was signed on November 24 in Turkey by Barqi Tojik Chairman Mahmadumar Asozoda and Breshna Head Abdulbari Umar. According to Barqi Tojik spokesperson Qurbon Ahmadzoda, the agreement is valid only during the summer period - from May to September - and is renewed annually until 2028, reports Avesta.tj.

Ahmadzoda emphasized that electricity exports are possible only when there are no restrictions on the domestic market. "During the summer flood season, to avoid spilling water without using turbines, we supply electricity to Afghanistan. This has no connection to winter restrictions. When quotas are introduced in the country, all generated energy is used exclusively within Tajikistan," Ahmadzoda clarified.

The agreement aims at the rational use of water resources and maintaining energy stability in the region. However, the company has not disclosed details regarding the volumes and costs of electricity supplies for 2025.

Barqi Tojik reiterated that since the introduction of winter restrictions, electricity exports are completely halted to meet domestic demand. Electricity exports to Afghanistan remain part of the cooperation between the two countries, particularly relevant during the summer months.
