On October 24, 2024, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, addressed the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan. According to Zakon.kz, Tokayev highlighted Kazakhstan’s strong ties with BRICS member states and stressed the organization’s role as a significant global force uniting nations across continents to promote development, solidarity, and shared opportunities.
Tokayev emphasized the BRICS coalition's ability to shape a future based on prosperity, mutual respect, and partnership. He underscored Kazakhstan's positive relations with each BRICS member and expressed confidence that BRICS's multilateral efforts would complement the mission of the United Nations.
Additionally, he praised Russia’s initiative to establish a security framework in Eurasia aimed at easing geopolitical tensions by building trust and cooperation. Tokayev also voiced support for China’s Global Security Initiative, emphasizing multilateralism, sovereignty protection, and peaceful conflict resolution. Kazakhstan aligns with China and Brazil's peace plans concerning the conflict in Ukraine.
Tokayev expressed concern about the escalating crisis in the Middle East, which has led to significant human casualties and a humanitarian disaster. He advocated for addressing the root causes of conflicts, such as poverty, inequality, and lack of education, as essential measures to strengthen international solidarity.
Before the BRICS Summit in Kazan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan made a statement that Kazakhstan does not seek to join BRICS, giving preference to the UN.
