GULISTON (Tajikistan) - Participants in the 9th Regional Meeting of Heads of Border Agencies of CIS Member States, held in Guliston, Tajikistan, have developed a set of practical measures to maintain stability along the Commonwealth's external borders in the Central Asian region. This was reported by Khovar, citing the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.

The event was attended by delegations from the border agencies of six countries — Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan — as well as representatives of the Coordination Service of the Council of Commanders of Border Troops, the CIS Anti-Terrorism Center, and the Secretariat of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

The key topic of discussion was measures to counter threats to border security along the external borders of CIS countries in Central Asia. According to the general consensus, the unstable military-political and economic situation in Afghanistan is expected to have a destabilizing impact on border security in the region over the medium term.

The parties positively assessed the practice of including issues related to sharing practical experience in preventing modern challenges in the agendas of working meetings and international forums. Particular attention was paid to coordinating efforts to combat cross-border threats, including drug trafficking, illegal migration, extremism, and terrorism.

Following the meeting, specific steps were agreed upon to strengthen cooperation among border services, including improving mechanisms for exchanging operational information, conducting joint exercises, and expanding training programs for personnel.
