The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) has presented proposals for participating in the Rogun Hydropower Plant construction project in Tajikistan, stated EDB Chairman Nikolai Podguzov, Sputnik-Tajikistan reports.
"Our desire and intention to participate in financing this project [construction of the Rogun Hydropower Plant] remain," he emphasized.
According to him, at this stage, the bank is awaiting a response from the Tajik side.
"We have provided official consent to participate in the international syndicate organized under the aegis of the Islamic Development Bank, and here we are waiting for a response from the organizers and the Ministry of Finance of Tajikistan on how to proceed. But we are ready to allocate resources for this," the bank's head stated.
Nikolai Podguzov also noted, "We cannot handle such a huge project alone, but together with other international financial institutions, we are ready to engage in it."
In December 2023, EDB Chairman Nikolai Podguzov mentioned that within the framework of the country strategy for Tajikistan until 2026, the bank's investment volume would increase several times.
In February 2024, Tajikistan's Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Zavki Zavkizoda, reported that EDB intends to increase its investment share in Tajikistan from 1% to 5% of the bank's total investment portfolio, which in total would amount to approximately $500-550 million.
The Rogun Hydropower Plant is located 110 km from Dushanbe on the Vakhsh River and is considered the largest in the region. Its construction began in 1976 but was halted after the collapse of the USSR.
Later, Tajikistan resumed the construction of the power plant, with two out of the six planned 600 MW units already launched, and the third unit scheduled for launch in 2025. Once completed, the station's capacity will be 3.6 GW, and the 335-meter-high dam will become the tallest in the world.
