Uzbekistan continues to actively increase its imports of electric vehicles, aiming to modernize its vehicle fleet and promote environmentally friendly transport.
In the first nine months of 2024, the country imported 16,209 electric vehicles at a total cost of $182.2 million, reports the Ministry of Economy of Uzbekistan.
Main vehicle-supplying countries to Uzbekistan:
China became the leading supplier to Uzbekistan:
- China: 16,131 vehicles (almost 99.5% of the total).
- The rest of the imports were distributed as follows:
- Kazakhstan: 23 electric vehicles;
- Hong Kong: 17 vehicles;
- Germany: 14 electric vehicles;
- Other countries: 24 vehicles.
Why is the popularity of electric vehicles growing?
Electric vehicles are capturing the market due to a range of advantages:
- Eco-friendliness: The absence of exhaust emissions helps reduce air pollution.
- Energy efficiency: Electric motors are significantly more efficient than traditional gasoline and diesel engines.
- Low operating costs: Fewer moving parts decrease the need for frequent maintenance.
- Quiet operation: Lower noise levels make electric vehicles suitable for urban environments.
- Fuel savings: Charging costs are often lower than gasoline or diesel prices.
Electric vehicles in Central Asia: Production and Export
There is varying involvement in the development of the electric vehicle market among Central Asian countries.
Electric vehicle manufacturers:
- Uzbekistan
- The UzAuto Motors plant, in collaboration with Chinese partners, began producing electric vehicles in 2023.
- UzAuto's electric vehicles are targeted at both the domestic market and exports to neighboring countries: Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Russia.
- Kazakhstan
- In 2022, Kazakhstan launched electric vehicle assembly at the Hyundai Trans Kazakhstan plant.
- The produced electric vehicles are exported to Russia and partially to Kyrgyzstan.
Electric vehicle importers:
- Uzbekistan
- Primarily imports from China, Kazakhstan, and Europe.
- Kyrgyzstan
- Actively increases imports from China.
- Tajikistan and Turkmenistan
- Consume small batches of electric vehicles, mainly imported from Russia and China.
The development of the electric vehicle market in Central Asia demonstrates growth in both production and consumer activity.
Uzbekistan leads in import volumes, while Kazakhstan focuses on production. These trends reflect the region's aspiration for ecological modernization and the strengthening of trade relations.
