Uzbekistan, in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates, will launch a "Waste to Energy" plant, announced the Ministry of Ecology of Uzbekistan. The relevant Memorandum was signed between the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of Uzbekistan and the Emirati company Tadweer (Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company) during the COP28 forum in Dubai, the Uzbek Ministry stated.

"The Memorandum will contribute to the implementation of modern, innovative, and environmentally friendly technologies and services in the field of solid waste management (SWM) and enhance sustainability. Additionally, a 'Waste to Energy' plant is planned to be launched in Uzbekistan," the statement said.

The project will commence with the development of a technical and economic justification and initially cover the Navoi, Bukhara regions, and the Fergana Valley, studying waste utilization practices in each region.

"In mutual cooperation, we set important goals such as the development of waste processing infrastructure, collection and transportation of solid household waste, sorting, processing, disposal, and improvement of the management system for the production of electric and thermal energy," noted Aziz Abdukhakimov, the Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of Uzbekistan.

According to the Emirati side, this initiative will make a significant contribution to mitigating the consequences of climate change.

As part of the collaboration, a waste collection and removal system will be developed, focusing on the sorting, processing, and disposal of solid waste. Attention will also be given to extracting landfill gas for electricity and heat energy production. The project involves installing waste sorting lines at facilities producing solid waste and establishing enterprises for recycling secondary raw materials, including plastic, paper, glass, and aluminum.

Studies indicate that active waste and resource management can reduce the impact of global greenhouse gas emissions by 15-20%, leading to substantial environmental and economic benefits.
