The European Union has allocated €6.5 million to the government of Kyrgyzstan as a grant to support the national education system, the Ministry of Education and Science of Kyrgyzstan reported, citing Economist.kg.

The funds are aimed at improving the quality of school education and ensuring equal access for all children, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or language. Special focus will be placed on advancing STEM education (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), enhancing digital and media literacy, introducing “green skills,” updating teaching materials, and improving teacher training.

This tranche is the third installment in the EU’s total €27 million support package for the implementation of the national education program “Altyn Kazyk.”

Acting EU Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Hans Farnhammer emphasized that education is a core component of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, aimed at fostering sustainable development in partner countries:

“Whether in Europe or in Kyrgyzstan, it is essential to equip our children with the tools and knowledge they need to build a prosperous future for themselves and their communities. High-quality, fair, and inclusive education for all is a long-term priority of the EU-Kyrgyzstan partnership,” the ambassador stated.

Across Central Asia, the EU is actively supporting education initiatives. In Uzbekistan, €37 million has been allocated to reform secondary education and implement digital learning tools. In Kazakhstan, a €12 million joint initiative launched in 2024 focuses on vocational education and the development of “green skills.” In Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, the EU assists in introducing modern teaching methods and teacher professional development programs.

Experts note that such systematic support strengthens human capital and contributes to the long-term socio-economic development of the region.
