Family of ex-president of Kazakhstan disappears from country's tax base

The individual identification numbers (IIN) of the family members of Kazakhstan’s first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, have disappeared without a trace from the database of the State Revenue Committee of Kazakhstan. According to one theory, Nazarbayev and his family may have relocated to Russia and obtained Russian citizenship.

An IIN is a unique number assigned to every citizen, used for accessing government services and accounting in the tax system.

However, journalists have discovered that it is not only Nursultan Nazarbayev’s data that is missing from the SRC Kazakhstan website but also those of his daughters, Dariga and Dinara, as well as his influential son-in-law Timur Kulibayev, who for years was considered the gray cardinal of Kazakhstan’s economy, Eurasiatoday.ru reports.

The Nazarbayev clan, losing its levers of influence, has faced increasing isolation over the past two years. Following the events of January 2022, when power in Kazakhstan effectively shifted to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the ex-president’s family lost control over key law enforcement agencies, including the National Security Committee, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. These losses stripped the Nazarbayevs of their former immunity and now seemingly forced them to leave the country.

Adding to the speculation, a recent visit by Nursultan Nazarbayev to Russian President Vladimir Putin may indicate that Russia has granted Nazarbayev citizenship and asylum. The Kremlin likely views the former Kazakh leader as a useful tool for exerting pressure on Kazakhstan’s new leadership.

The whereabouts and activities of the Nazarbayev clan remain unclear. However, their disappearance from the tax database appears to be an attempt to evade accountability and conceal their assets.

It seems that Kazakh authorities are decisively dismantling the system of influence that Nazarbayev built over more than three decades. The Nazarbayev era in Kazakhstan has come to an end, and its legacy, along with his relatives, is rapidly fading into obscurity.
