In January 2025, Kyrgyzstan became the only country among the CIS states to increase natural gas production. Despite modest volumes, the growth was quite significant compared to the same period last year.
Kyrgyzstan recorded a 16.7% increase in natural gas production, reaching 4 million cubic meters. The main fields are located in the Jalal-Abad region, where the country’s primary gas reserves are concentrated, according to a report by Kyrgyzstan’s State Statistics Committee.
In 2024, the republic produced 28.2 million cubic meters, indicating a steady trend toward increased output.
CIS Gas Statistics: January 2025
The total volume of natural gas production in the CIS countries in January 2025 amounted to 75.8 billion cubic meters, which is 3.9% less compared to January 2024.
Russia remains the largest producer, accounting for over 82% of total CIS production.
However, its output dropped by 4.1%, amounting to 62.5 billion cubic meters.
Kazakhstan maintained production at 5.4 billion cubic meters, while Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan showed declines of 6.4% and 3%, respectively.
Infrastructure Projects and Future Plans
As part of the development of Kyrgyzstan’s gas sector, projects are underway to drill new wells and modernize existing infrastructure.
In particular, Gazprom Kyrgyzstan plans to increase natural gas production to 100 million cubic meters per year through the drilling of new production wells.
"A project has been approved under which PJSC Gazprom will extract oil and gas in our country, supply our population with gas, and refine oil at our refineries," said Kyrgyz Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibraev at the XII St. Petersburg International Gas Forum.
Work is also ongoing to expand gas supply to settlements, including the construction of gas distribution networks in various regions of the country, he emphasized.
Despite the positive dynamics, the Kyrgyz Republic faces a number of challenges in the gas sector.
These include the need to modernize infrastructure, attract investment, and ensure energy security.
Nevertheless, current successes demonstrate the country’s potential in developing its own gas industry and reducing dependence on imported energy resources.
