President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon spoke at various events dedicated to water issues in New York City, Asiaplustj.info reports citing the press service of the President of Tajikistan.

At the UN Conference on the Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Objectives of the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development 2018-2028", Razmon said that in 2025 Dushanbe would host a high-level international conference on the conservation of glaciers.

Tajikistan, on whose territory 60% of the water resources of the Central Asian region are formed, within the framework of its chairmanship in the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, will strengthen its efforts to further expand cooperation in the field of water in Central Asia, President Razmon said.

At the national level, the country's strategy in the water sector will be developed in accordance with today's requirements and standards, he added.

President Oahmon noted that in Tajikistan, 98% of electricity is generated by hydroelectric power plants, and this at a time when the country has mastered only 5% of the country's hydropower potential.

“Therefore, we have decided to double our hydropower potential by 2050 and make our respective contribution to the development of the green economy,” the head of state said.

Tajikistan ranks sixth in the world in terms of the share of electricity generation from renewable water sources, that is, “green” energy.
