In northeastern Afghanistan, as a result of a devastating flood on May 10 caused by heavy rains, 315 people have died, reports DW citing the Ministry of Interior in the Afghan government.
According to the Afghan Ministry of Interior as of May 12, over 1600 residents of the country have suffered injuries of varying degrees of severity. The provinces of Baghlan, Takhar, and Badakhshan were the most affected.
Representatives of the United Nations World Food Programme indicated that over 1000 houses have been destroyed as a result of the disaster, and most of the affected areas are inaccessible to trucks.
As reported by the international charitable organization Save the Children, children are particularly affected by the calamity.
It is noted that in the five most affected districts of the Baghlan province, there are 600 thousand residents, including 310 thousand children.
This is the second devastating flood in Afghanistan this spring. Earlier in April, over 70 people died as a result of a natural disaster. Most of the deaths occurred due to the collapse of house roofs. In total, about two thousand buildings, three mosques, and four schools were damaged.
