Kazakhstan will receive 11 billion cubic meters of water by April 2025. This was agreed upon by the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, the press service of the Government of Kazakhstan reported.
The agreement on this was reached in Dushanbe during the 88th meeting of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination of Central Asia (ICWC). It was attended by the heads of water management agencies of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
The parties reviewed the progress of the inter-irrigation period in the Syr Darya and Amu Darya river basins.
It should be noted that the planned volume of water will flow into the Shardara reservoir of the Turkestan region along the Syr Darya River. Of this, 1.6 billion cubic meters will be sent to the Aral Sea.
“This will allow us to accumulate the necessary volume of water for the irrigation period this year, as well as ensure the maintenance of the state of ecosystems in the southern regions of Kazakhstan. I would like to note that the situation in the south is different from the west and north of the country. There are no floods and flood waters in such volumes and scales. And in summer, the need for irrigation water is very high.
Therefore, in the south, we are doing completely different work to provide water. Water diplomacy is a priority there, and we have it at a fairly good level. Thanks to the negotiations, we provided the south of the country with uninterrupted supplies last year. We resolve all issues related to water distribution and protection of transboundary water bodies together with our colleagues from the Central Asian countries,” said Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
