In January 2023, inflation in Kazakhstan amounted to 20.7% year on year. This is a new anti-record after the historical maximum of 19.6%, which was reached in 2022, the Ia-centr.ru platform reports.
The consumer sector suffers significantly: food prices increased by 25.7% compared to January 2022, non-food products - by 20.2%, paid services rose by 14.2%.
Earlier, the IMF had already lowered growth forecasts for Kazakhstan from 4.4% to 4.3%. The National Bank of Kazakhstan promised annual inflation in the range of 20-21% and its peak in the first quarter of 2023.
In January 2023, the government of Kazakhstan increased the salaries of five groups of public sector employees: doctors, teachers, firefighters, police and the military. The growth ranged from 10 to 70% depending on the profession and qualification category.
Before the increase, the average monthly nominal salary in education was 222,905 tenge, in healthcare - 245,212 tenge, in public administration and defense - 249,408. The average monthly salary in the country was 299,782 tenge.
