President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and held bilateral talks in New York, the press service of the President of Kyrgyzstan reports.

During the meeting, the UN Secretary-General noted that Kyrgyzstan holds a special place in Central Asia for implementing mountain initiatives and has significant potential to take a leading role in renewable energy and climate projects.

In response, Japarov reaffirmed Kyrgyzstan's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing a people-oriented policy. He announced the start of the second voluntary national review of the SDGs, aimed at achieving the ambitious goal of being among the top 30 countries in the world by 2030.

Japarov also highlighted the region’s climate challenges, such as glacier melting and reduced water resources. He called for support in establishing a UN Regional Energy Efficiency Center and proposed a mechanism for debt-for-"green" projects, which would make a significant contribution to the fight against climate change.

The President of Kyrgyzstan emphasized the importance of promoting the mountain agenda. Japarov invited the UN to participate in the preparation of the Second Global Mountain Summit "Bishkek +25," which will take place in 2027, and proposed the creation of an international platform "UN - Mountains" to coordinate efforts for the sustainable development of mountain regions.

Sadyr Japarov arrived in New York on September 22 to participate in the UN General Assembly and held several bilateral meetings.
