President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana on Thursday, emphasized the constructive role of the organization and noted its potential, reported by Vlast.kz.

"The current complex situation is largely a result of the acute crisis in the entire system of international relations. Against this background, the SCO should strengthen its stabilizing and constructive role to overcome the erosion of international law, prevent geopolitical fault lines, and ultimately strengthen peace and security in the broad global context," Tokayev said in his speech.

He expressed confidence that the SCO "has exceptional opportunities to act as a guarantor of peace and security across the Eurasian continent."

At the same time, Tokayev called for enhancing the SCO's activities. Among the proposals put forward by Kazakhstan is strengthening the role of the Secretariat and the Secretary-General.

The SCO now includes ten member states since this summit. Apart from Kazakhstan, these are Belarus, India, Iran, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Another two dozen countries are observers and partners of the SCO.

With the conclusion of the term of office of Secretary-General Zhang Min from China, the new Secretary-General of the Organization was elected Nurlan Yermekbayev, 61, a former Defense Minister of Kazakhstan from 2018 to 2021.
