Kazakhstan and China have agreed to implement a joint “Smart Customs” project at the Bakhty-Pokitu border checkpoint, according to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Finance.
A key feature of the initiative will be the use of unmanned trucks for cross-border freight transportation.
“The automated system will allow cargo to cross the border around the clock with minimal human involvement,” the ministry noted.
A unified electronic customs declaration, recognized by both countries, will also be introduced to significantly speed up clearance procedures.
The new system is expected to increase cargo throughput to 10 million tons per year, reduce transportation costs, and improve transparency in logistics operations. Special emphasis will be placed on boosting the export of Kazakh agricultural products—such as grain, oilseeds, and meat.
The “Smart Customs” project also includes modernization of border infrastructure, creation of new jobs, and attraction of investment.
Officials say the project will strengthen Kazakhstan’s role as a key transport hub in Central Asia and boost trade with China, which reached $31.5 billion in 2024.
