President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev discussed increasing trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to $1 billion (81.3 billion rubles) in the coming years with the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, according to the press service of the President of Kazakhstan.
The two leaders emphasized the need to explore new areas of economic cooperation and to take systematic measures to boost mutual trade volumes. Berdimuhamedov called Kazakhstan a key strategic partner of Turkmenistan.
“Our bilateral relations in the political, trade-economic, and cultural-humanitarian spheres have good prospects. We are grateful to you for supporting Turkmenistan’s initiative at the UN to declare the International Year of Peace and Trust,” Berdimuhamedov stated.
Tokayev, in turn, highlighted promising transportation projects, including the construction of the Turghundi–Herat–Kandahar–Spin Boldak railway, which will open new export routes. The Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan–Iran railway and the under-construction Turkmenbashi–Garabogaz–Kazakhstan border highway also play an important role in developing the North–South transit corridor.
Additionally, the parties discussed cooperation in education and digitalization. Kazakhstan expressed readiness to assist Turkmenistan in modernizing public services and training IT specialists.
