Following the state visit of Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to Astana, the leaders of the two countries held a joint briefing for media representatives. The briefing summarized the extensive package of agreements signed earlier and outlined concrete strategic objectives.
Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized that brotherly Turkmenistan is an important and reliable strategic partner. He congratulated the Turkmen people on the 30th anniversary of neutrality, calling Turkmenistan’s policy a symbol of commitment to peace and stability.
In his statement, President Tokayev focused on the operational goals achieved during the talks:
Trade. The sides agreed to take steps to increase bilateral trade turnover from the current $500 million to $1 billion. A special Action Plan will be adopted, and reciprocal Trade Houses will be established.
Transport. The leaders highlighted the special role of the Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan–Iran railway (the North–South corridor), where freight volumes grew by 14% over 10 months. They agreed to fully utilize the capacities of Caspian ports (Aktau, Kuryk, Turkmenbashi) for container transport and to consider building a railway line toward South Asia via Afghanistan.
Agriculture. They discussed prospects for increasing supplies of Kazakh wheat, oils, and dairy and meat products. Kazakhstan proposed exploring the construction of a grain terminal on the Turkmen–Afghan border.
Infrastructure. The sides decided to consider launching direct commercial flights between cities of the two countries.
Education. Kazakhstan proposed exploring the opening of a branch of a Kazakh university in Turkmenistan.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov presented Turkmenistan’s position, reaffirming readiness to deepen strategic cooperation.
He stressed the importance of stepping up investment policies to implement large-scale joint projects in industrial cooperation, noting substantial opportunities to expand partnership in electricity and chemical industries.
Special attention was given to transport and logistics. Berdimuhamedov stated that, given the current geopolitical and geoeconomic situation, it is essential to activate existing East–West and North–South transit corridors.
The heads of state confirmed their shared vision and closeness of positions on key regional and international issues, including matters related to the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan praised Turkmenistan’s initiatives carried out under the Ashgabat-proclaimed International Year of Peace and Trust.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov’s visit was described as a historic milestone in bilateral relations, according to the Akorda website. The visit began on November 24, 2025.
