Kazakhstan and China have started the construction of a container hub on the Caspian Sea, reports Kazinform.

The project is being implemented by the Chinese State Company Port Lianyungang in collaboration with the Aktau Sea Trade Port.

The hub will increase container transportation in the Trans-Caspian direction through Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey, and redirect part of the transit cargoes traveling from China to Europe.

Construction of the hub has begun in the Mangystau region. Currently, land development work is underway with the use of more than 20 pieces of specialized equipment.

At present, container transportation through sea ports has increased by 84% and has reached 58,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit, an exact measurement used for determining the cargo capacity of container ships and terminals).

The construction is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
