Kazakhstan has large reserves of energy resources. In January-December 2021, according to the Kazakhstan Electricity Grid Operating Company JSC KEGOC, Kazakhstan's power plants generated 114.4 billion kWh of electricity, which is 5.8% more than in the same period of 2020, according to KEGOS, writes Forbes.kz.
Electricity consumption over the same period increased by 6%, which was due to the growth of production in the energy-intensive industries of Kazakhstan, as well as the entry into the market of cryptocurrency miners. According to the results of five months of 2022, Kazakhstan's power plants generated 48.1 billion kWh of electricity, which is 1.4% less than in the same period last year. At the same time, electricity consumption in the country increased by 0.1%.
According to the rating published by the IndexMundi portal, Kazakhstan ranks 44th in terms of per capita electricity consumption, with an indicator of 4936 kWh. The monitoring was based on the results of data for 2020, the indicator was calculated on the basis of data on the total electricity consumption of the country for the year, divided by the size of its population. Among the nearly 200 countries included in the ranking, Iceland ranks first with 50,409 kWh, Norway ranks second by a wide margin (22,351 kWh), and Kuwait closes the top three (19,300 kWh). At the bottom of the table are the Central African Republic and Somalia (27 kWh each), Guinea-Bissau (19 kWh), Chad (12 kWh).
In the CIS countries, Kazakhstan in terms of electricity consumption per capita is second only to Russia (6418 kWh, 33rd place), followed by Belarus (3347 kWh). The lowest rates among the countries of the region are noted in Uzbekistan (1605 kWh), Tajikistan (1461 kWh) and Moldova (1308 kWh).
At the same time, some countries of the former USSR are among the states with the lowest cost of electricity. Thus, Kyrgyzstan, where the cost of 1 kWh is $0.017, ranks fourth here, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are also in the top ten ($0.023 and $0.027, respectively). Kazakhstan with a price of $0.039 per 1 kWh is in 16th place in the world.
