The sixth meeting of the Interdepartmental Working Group on Data Reliability in the Agricultural Sector was held in Astana. Representatives from the Bureau of National Statistics, the Ministry of Agriculture, Kazakhstan Gharysh Sapary, and experts participated. Participants supported the idea that Kazakhstan should expand the practical use of space monitoring data in the agricultural sector to improve the reliability of statistics and control government support, Kazinform reports.
Participants emphasized that satellite data is becoming a key tool for verifying crop production information. The digital transformation of the agricultural sector and the integration of government information systems were also discussed.
Agency representatives believe that the wider use of space monitoring will improve statistical transparency, improve the targeting of government support, and ensure more effective planning for agricultural development.
Kazakhstan is effectively transitioning space monitoring from a monitoring tool to a mechanism for state agricultural governance. This is especially important for a country with a vast territory, where traditional agricultural land monitoring requires significant resources and does not always allow for the prompt identification of discrepancies between reported crop conditions and actual crop performance.
Integrating satellite data with government information systems can improve the accuracy of estimating crop areas, yields, and the effectiveness of subsidies, as well as reduce the risk of receiving unjustified government support. These technologies could potentially be used to predict droughts, assess pasture conditions, and manage water resources.
For Kazakhstan, this also means a transition to data-driven agriculture, where decisions are made based on objective digital data, not just farm reports.
