A meeting to prepare for the second phase of the project to restore the Northern Aral Sea took place at the office of the Executive Directorate of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea in Almaty, reports Ritmeurasia.ru.
“The upcoming project is a continuation of the large-scale project to regulate the Syr Darya riverbed and preserve the Northern Aral, which was implemented from 2002 to 2010 and had a positive effect on the entire Aral Sea region. The second phase covers many different areas, from stable water supply to the Northern Aral to the development of economic and social projects,” noted Kazakhstan's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
The project consists of three main components. The first involves improving conditions for fisheries and the aquatic environment within and near the sea, as well as stabilizing the wetlands in the Syr Darya delta. The water infrastructure will be enhanced, and the hydrological state of the Northern Aral and the Syr Darya delta will be improved.
The second component supports sustainable economic, social, and environmental activities in the Kyzylorda region through the development of fisheries, livestock farming, tourism, and afforestation. The third component aims to improve water resource management systems in the Aral-Syr Darya basin.
