The banks in Kazakhstan were allowed to carry out transactions with payment cards of the Mir system, the Zakon.kz portal reports.
On December 8, 2022, the Kazakhstan Agency for Financial Market Regulation and Development (AFMRD) received a letter from the Office of Foreign Assets Control, a division of the U.S. Department of the Treasury (OFAC).
"The American department explained that it does not object to the use of bank cards of the Mir system by private individuals, namely, citizens who migrated from Russia to Kazakhstan, to carry out operations that ensure their livelihoods," the press service of the AFMRD of Kazakhstan said.
At the same time, the letter notes that "operations with this payment system will remain under special control in order to prevent its use to circumvent anti-Russian sanctions."
"In order to provide clarifications on the possibilities of using payment cards of the Mir system in Kazakhstan, the Kazakh Agency for Regulation and Development of the Financial Market held a meeting with representatives of Kazakh banks," the press service of the AFMRD said.
In the fall of 2022, most of the banks in Kazakhstan suspended the service of payment cards for customers of the Mir system.
