The urban population amounts to 12,795,502 people, while the rural population stands at 7,505,116 people.
The largest cities have the following populations:
- Astana – 1,536,924 people
- Almaty – 2,297,491 people
- Shymkent – 1,258,878 people
The most densely populated regions are:
- Turkistan Region – 2,154,144 people
- Almaty Region – 1,562,402 people
- Zhambyl Region – 1,221,808 people
