The President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Japarov, has signed a law amending migration legislation to establish the status of "digital nomad," according to the official website of the President of Kyrgyzstan.
The law aims to attract highly skilled IT professionals, promote innovative projects, boost high-tech industries, increase tax revenues, create jobs, and develop tourism.
The categories of foreign citizens eligible for digital nomad status, their rights and responsibilities, as well as the procedure for obtaining the status and the conditions for their stay and that of their close relatives, will be determined by a separate government resolution.
Benefits for digital nomads include:
- Exemption from mandatory registration at the place of stay;
- Assignment of an individual identification number;
- Elimination of the need for a work permit;
- Permission to engage in entrepreneurial activities;
- The ability to open bank accounts.
The Ministry of Economy and Commerce highlighted the positive results of a pilot project launched in 2022, which demonstrated significant interest in Kyrgyzstan from foreign specialists.
The pilot project, which ran from August 2022 to December 2023, included citizens from six countries: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, and Russia.
Digital nomads are professionals who work remotely while traveling the world. The term "digital nomad" first appeared in the book *Digital Nomad*, published in 1997 by researchers Tsugio Makimoto and David Manners.
The book described a revolutionary lifestyle shift enabled by the internet and technological advancements, particularly the emergence of portable, internet-connected devices that allow people to travel, work, and live wherever they choose.
