Dubai has hosted the second ministerial roundtable on the Kambar-Ata-1 Hydropower Plant (HPP) project. Representatives of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan have formally requested technical and expert assistance from the World Bank to help prepare the largest energy project in the region, reports Economist.kg.
The Kambar-Ata-1 HPP, with a capacity of 1,860 MW, is to be built on the Naryn River in Kyrgyzstan. It is seen as a strategic asset capable of enhancing Central Asia’s energy security. The participating countries have asked the World Bank for support in updating the feasibility study, conducting environmental and social assessments, and developing a sustainable financial model for the project.
The meeting brought together energy ministers from the three countries and senior representatives from the World Bank. Tatiana Proskuryakova, representing the World Bank, highlighted the unprecedented level of cooperation in the region and reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to support the initiative.
Following the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their political commitment to the project and agreed on the next steps in its preparation. The implementation of Kambar-Ata-1 is expected to begin in 2025.
