Issues on demarcation and delimitation of disputed sections of the joint border were discussed by the working groups of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in Bishkek, the press service of the Government of Kyrgyzstan reported.

"In accordance with the schedule of meetings for 2023 and the agreement reached through diplomatic channels, in Bishkek from April 1 to April 7, 2023, regular meetings of topographic working groups and working groups on legal issues of the government delegations of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan on delimitation and demarcation of the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border.

The length of the state border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is about 980 km. Negotiations on its delimitation have been ongoing since December 2002. Currently, more than two thirds of the border line has been identified and mutually recognized by the states, the remaining sections are considered controversial. The unsettledness of this issue has repeatedly become the cause of conflicts involving local residents and military personnel of the two countries, including with the use of firearms. The last of them took place in the early autumn of 2022, on the Kyrgyz side, more than 60 people died during the clashes.

In total, since 2014, more than 10 serious conflicts have occurred on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border. The only thing left for Kyrgyzstan to complete the process of delimitation and demarcation of the border is with the Tajik side. With the rest of the neighbors, the boundaries have been established and agreed upon.
