Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov arrived in Dushanbe at the invitation of Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon, Sputnik Tajikistan reports.
During the talks, the two leaders discussed finalizing border delimitation, boosting economic cooperation, and implementing the regional energy project CASA-1000.
Following the meeting, 16 agreements were signed, covering trade, industry, tourism, and environmental cooperation. At the same time, an investment forum brought together over 500 business representatives from both countries in the Tajik capital.
Particular attention was given to plans to increase bilateral trade to $500 million by 2030. However, experts call this goal ambitious: the historical trade peak was $186.5 million in 2013, while in 2023 the figure dropped to just $11 million. Achieving the target will require removing trade barriers, developing infrastructure, and opening new border checkpoints.
A key topic was the CASA-1000 project, which aims to export electricity from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Total investment is estimated at $1.2 billion. Upon completion, Dushanbe expects annual revenues of up to $200 million, while Bishkek could earn up to $230 million.
The two sides also agreed on joint projects in the agro-industrial sector, including creating logistics hubs and sharing technologies. These initiatives are intended to strengthen economic ties and rebuild trust after recent border tensions.
