Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have signed an agreement on the delimitation of their shared border, RIA Novosti reports, citing the press service of the Kyrgyz government.

In Bishkek, the parties signed a package of documents, including a state border treaty, intergovernmental agreements on energy facilities and water resources, as well as an agreement on the joint use of roads and the construction of new highways.

In 2024, an incident involving gunfire and the use of heavy military equipment occurred on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border. The clashes lasted for three days.

At approximately 12:20 PM in the Ak-Bosogo area of the Leilek district in Kyrgyzstan’s Batken region, a border patrol noticed Tajik shepherds grazing livestock 250–300 meters from the state border.

Kyrgyzstan’s Border Service press center explained to RIA Novosti that Tajik servicemen ignored the patrol’s demands and began throwing stones. One of the shepherds fired several shots at the border guards. According to preliminary reports, one of the Tajiks sustained a leg injury.

Due to the fact that only half of the 984-kilometer Kyrgyz-Tajik border had been delimited, more than 230 armed incidents occurred between the two countries following the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 2022, an especially severe conflict led to the evacuation of 140,000 people.

Negotiations began after the presidents of both countries held an emergency meeting in Samarkand. Following this, the negotiation process significantly intensified. By the end of 2024, the parties reached an agreement on the disputed sections of the border.

The key figures in reaching the agreement were the heads of the national security committees of both countries, Kamchybek Tashiev and Saimumin Yatimov, who led their respective government delegations in the negotiations. They signed the border delimitation agreement in Bishkek.
