Possessing unique natural resources, Kyrgyzstan continues to strengthen its position in Central Asia’s tourism industry. Birdwatching is emerging as a key sector in sustainable tourism, not only attracting visitors but also playing an important role in biodiversity conservation and environmental education, reports Akchabar.kg.
On the southern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake, the Teskey Geopark has introduced eight specialized birdwatching routes. This initiative is part of the "Green Economy and Sustainable Private Sector Development in Kyrgyzstan" program, implemented by Germany’s GIZ with financial support from BMZ, the EU, and the Swiss government.
Additionally, the project supports three artisan workshops that bring together over 50 women from the Jeti-Oguz and Ton districts of Issyk-Kul region. These workshops produce souvenirs inspired by the region’s natural diversity and the newly introduced tourism routes.
The introduction of new birdwatching routes and the development of handicrafts contribute to positioning Kyrgyzstan as a hub for responsible eco-tourism. This, in turn, supports environmental conservation while improving the economic and social well-being of local communities.
