Kyrgyzstan has climbed seven places in the Global Innovation Index (GII), reaching 99th position. This achievement was highlighted during the 12th International Forum "Anticounterfeit-2024" held in Astana, Economist.kg reports.
The forum addressed topics related to intellectual property protection and innovation development within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Bakhyt Sultanov, Minister for Economy and Financial Policy of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), emphasized that safeguarding intellectual property rights remains a priority for the union. The EEC, in collaboration with member states, has developed two international agreements: one on combating online intellectual property infringements and another on establishing a unified service for accessing information about industrial property protected across the EAEU countries.
According to an analytical review by the EEC, Kyrgyzstan has made significant progress in the GII over the past five years, rising seven places. In comparison, Armenia ranked 63rd (up nine positions), and Kazakhstan secured 78th place (up three positions).
Statistics from the EAEU reveal over 46,000 intellectual property violations in the past five years, with more than 60 million counterfeit goods seized. Counterfeit items are most commonly found among clothing, footwear, toys, automotive parts, household appliances, and food products.
The Global Innovation Index, published since 2007, assesses countries' innovation potential across 81 indicators, including institutions, human capital, infrastructure, market sophistication, and business environment. It serves as a tool for evaluating innovation mechanisms' effectiveness. Leading the 2023 index are Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and the Netherlands.
