A Kyrgyz delegation led by Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision Melis Mashiev participated in the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. During the forum, Kyrgyzstan formally acceded to two critical international conventions: the Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident and the Convention on Assistance in the Case of a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency, 24.kg reports.
Minister Mashiev reaffirmed Kyrgyzstan’s commitment to nuclear safety, non-proliferation, and the peaceful use of atomic energy. He presented progress on environmental remediation of Soviet-era uranium sites — highlighting completed projects in Min-Kush and Shekaftar with EBRD support, and outlining upcoming work in Mailuu-Suu.
A major outcome was the signing of the Country Programme Framework for Technical Cooperation with IAEA (2026–2031), prioritizing collaboration in nuclear applications for medicine, agriculture, workforce training, and environmental safety.
Kyrgyzstan’s parliament, the Jogorku Kenesh, has also ratified an updated “Small Quantities Protocol” to its IAEA safeguards agreement, enhancing transparency.
On the sidelines, Kyrgyz officials held bilateral meetings with representatives from INTERPOL, OPEC Fund, UNIDO, and others, expressing readiness to expand partnerships for the safe, secure, and sustainable use of nuclear science and technology.
