Members of the Kyrgyzstan Parliament have reviewed and approved the draft law "On the Accession of the Kyrgyz Republic to the Convention on the International Maritime Organization adopted in Geneva on March 6, 1948" in the second reading, Akchabar reports.

The initiator of the draft law is the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Akylbek Japarov.

The information about the draft law was presented by the Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, Defense, Security, and Migration, Ulan Primov.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is one of the specialized agencies of the United Nations and serves as the primary mechanism for state interaction in the field of international maritime navigation and global trade. It facilitates the resolution of political and technical issues in accordance with the regulatory framework containing relevant norms and standards, as well as their implementation by member states.

Membership in the IMO also opens up opportunities in the "flag of convenience" market. The "flag of convenience" market involves registering maritime vessels under the flags of other countries, which facilitates tax payments and provides other privileges.
