According to historical records, Kyrgyz statehood was documented in Chinese archives around 3,000 years ago. Historical evidence also indicates the existence of the Kyrgyz Khaganate (statehood) in the 8th-9th centuries AD. However, Kyrgyz statehood was later lost.
It was only in 1924, within the USSR, that the creation of the Kara-Kyrgyz Autonomous Region was announced, which later became the foundation for the creation of the Kyrgyz SSR in 1936. After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Kyrgyzstan regained independence and was recognized as an independent state by the international community. Kyrgyzstan celebrates Independence Day on August 31.
