Kyrgyzstan plans to start exporting electricity in 2026

In 2026, Kyrgyzstan is set to achieve a surplus in energy production and commence the export of electricity, announced Akylbek Japarov, the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic, while addressing the People's Kurultai, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan informed.

To address the electricity deficit in 2023, Japarov stated that 5 small hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 71 MW, 5 solar power stations, and the second hydro unit of the Toktogul Hydroelectric Power Plant have been put into operation. In 2024, the capacity is expected to increase by 178 MW, including the commissioning of 25 small hydroelectric power plants and another hydro unit at the Toktogul Hydroelectric Power Plant. Additionally, in the coming year, solar power stations with a total capacity of 700 MW and the 5 MW Balasaryu Hydroelectric Power Plant in the Talas region will be put into operation. In 2024, smart meters (ASUEE) will be installed in 300,000 locations, reducing energy losses.

Japarov also highlighted the progress in major energy projects, mentioning the ongoing preparatory work for the Kambaratinskaya HPP-1, negotiations with the World Bank for the first stage of construction, and the initiation of the design process for the Kazarman, Kokomeren, Chatkal cascades, and the Kemine-Torugart 500 kV power line. He noted that preparations for the CASA-1000 project in the Kyrgyz part will be completed in 2024. The Kulanak HPP will become operational in two years.

"By 2026, we will achieve an energy surplus and begin exporting electricity," Japarov concluded.

The People's Kurultai took place on December 16-17, with the participation of President S. Japarov, Prime Minister A. Japarov, the Speaker, and members of the Kyrgyzstan Parliament.
