Kyrgyzstan Shifts Focus from Imported Fertilizers to Organic Farming

Kyrgyzstan remains heavily dependent on imports of mineral fertilizers. However, the country’s Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry emphasizes that the priority is not to increase the use of these inputs, but to shift towards organic farming, VB.kg reports.

This approach is embedded in Kyrgyzstan’s long-term strategy for the sustainable development of the agricultural sector. Organic fertilizers are safer for the environment, help restore soil fertility, improve product quality, and, as a result, contribute to better public health. This shift is particularly important in Kyrgyzstan, where a large share of the population is employed in agriculture.

In the coming years, the Ministry plans to gradually reduce the import of mineral fertilizers, develop domestic production of organic alternatives, and encourage farmers to adopt environmentally friendly technologies.

“Our goal is not just to reduce dependence on external supplies, but to create conditions for environmentally sustainable agriculture that ensures food security and strengthens the country’s export potential,” the Ministry stated.

Transitioning to organic farming is seen as an investment in the future, where caring for the land and public health becomes a cornerstone of national policy.

According to data from January–April 2025, agriculture accounted for over 4% of Kyrgyzstan’s GDP, though this figure represents a 0.4% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.

At the same time, there was a 2.8% increase in the gross output of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries during the first four months of 2025, mainly due to higher production in the livestock sector.

For the January–November 2024 period, the share of agriculture in Kyrgyzstan’s GDP stood at 9.5%.
