Leaders of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan pledge to resolve border disputes through diplomacy

Presidents of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan Emomali Rahmon and Sadyr Zhaparov during a telephone conversation on Saturday spoke in favor of intensifying the negotiation process on the delimitation and demarcation of the common border between the two countries, the press service of the President of Tajikistan said, TASS reports.

"The parties spoke in favor of a constructive approach to resolving all pressing issues of the Tajik-Kyrgyz bilateral agenda and intensifying the negotiation process within the framework of the intergovernmental commission on the delimitation and demarcation of the state border," the report says.

In recent years, the description of about 100 km of the border line between the states has been completed. As a result, the length of the agreed border line is already about 625 km, or 63% of its total length.

The press service of the President of Kyrgyzstan noted the progress in the process of securing the border line, and also stressed that the leaders of the two countries expressed their commitment to resolve all problems arising in this process exclusively through political and diplomatic means.

In November last year, Zhaparov said that Bishkek expects to resolve all questions about the disputed sections on the border with Tajikistan in the near future.

In mid-September last year, hostilities took place between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan with the use of heavy equipment on a number of sections of the common border. According to the Tajik side, over 40 residents of the republic were killed during the conflict. In Bishkek, 62 dead citizens of Kyrgyzstan were reported. The length of the border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan exceeds 980 km, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, dozens of disputed sections remained on it. Periodically there are conflicts involving military personnel and local residents.
