"On April 25, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon visited the Sarband hydroelectric power plant in the city of Levakant and launched hydroelectric unit No. 1 of this important energy facility," the report says. The capacity of the unit after reconstruction is 39 MW. This is the last of six units put into operation after the reconstruction of the hydroelectric power station , all the rest were put into operation in stages starting from 2018.

Prior to this, the plant's capacity was 160 MW, after restoration work it increased to 270 MW. Until April 20, 2023, the HPP generated over 3.132 billion kWh of electricity.

The construction of the Sarband hydroelectric power station began in 1956 on the basis of the Sharshara hydroelectric power station; its first unit was put into operation in 1962. Over 60 years of operation, most of the equipment has worn out, with the exception of the reconstruction of one hydroelectric unit in 2012, no restoration work was carried out.
