NASA satellites have captured images of the "ghost" island of Chigil-Deniz, located near the eastern shores of Azerbaijan. This unusual island, which formed two years ago, is now visible only from Earth's orbit, MIR 24 reports, citing Vice.
The island emerged in early 2023 following the activity of the Kumani mud volcano. By the end of 2024, water had almost completely swallowed the newly formed landmass, as clearly seen in satellite images.
The Kumani volcano, first recorded in 1861, is known for its ability to create temporary islands. Its most powerful eruption occurred in 1950, when it formed an island 700 meters wide and 6 meters high.
Researchers emphasize that monitoring Chigil-Deniz helps to better understand the geological processes of the Caspian Sea and their impact on the local ecosystem.
