The Administrative Affairs Authority of Afghanistan has announced the approval of a new independent body, the Oil and Gas Authority, following a request from cabinet members and a decree issued by the Taliban leadership, pajhwok.com reports.

In a post on X-Speak, Sheikh Nurul Haq Anwar, head of Afghanistan’s Administrative Affairs Authority, said that the establishment of the independent Oil and Gas Authority was approved upon a proposal from the Prime Minister’s Office and by decree of the Afghan leadership, at the request of cabinet members.

He explained that an administrative commission has been tasked with consolidating around eight departments from various ministries and agencies that had previously been involved in the oil and gas sector in a fragmented manner, integrating them into the newly created independent body.

According to Sheikh Anwar, the creation of the Oil and Gas Authority is expected to improve coordination, regulation, quality control, transparency, and overall governance of oil and gas extraction and imports in Afghanistan.

According to data from Neftegaz.ru as of October 2024, Afghanistan had 24 active oil wells producing about 1.35 thousand tonnes of oil per day, with plans to increase output to 3.0 thousand tonnes per day.

Oil production is mainly concentrated in the northern provinces of Sar-e Pol, Jawzjan, and Farah. The key oil fields include Kashkari, Sar-e Pol, and Angot, with total reserves estimated at over 200 million tonnes.
